We are excited to announce our newest resource. Whether you’re a new breaker or seasoned Whatnot streamer, we made this for you! Updated regularly with new tips and tricks.
You’re not alone! In fact, our community is growing every day. We actually just joined the card collecting & breaking community a few short months ago ourselves!
Taking the leap and running your first stream is nerve racking! Trust us, we know. It wasn’t to long ago that we started with a webcam and some cheap, dollar card stands and decided we’d figure it out as we went. The best thing to do is to jump in, ask lots of questions, and know that it doesn’t have to be perfect!
So you found this app called WhatNot and you are overwhelmed by the lingo, the fast paced auctions, and someone constantly yelling “Okay, Chat!”. Here we give you a brief guide as your starting point so you can figure out what you’re watching and how to be safe and have fun!
We’re your friendly starting point for one of the most creative communities in the world.
VeeFriends is more than a collectible — it’s a movement built around kindness, curiosity, and growth. Created by Gary Vaynerchuk, the project brings together collectors, entrepreneurs, and dreamers through art, storytelling, and real-life experiences. Whether you’re here for the cards, the characters, or the community, you’re in the right place. We fell in love with VeeFriends because it’s not just about owning something rare — it’s about what it represents: learning valuable character traits, building connections, and having fun with people from all walks of life.
Collect Characters with a Purpose
Every VeeFriends character teaches a core life value like patience, gratitude, or ambition.

You’d be hard pressed to find someone more trusted in the community. She’s also one of the kindest and most helpful, which is saying something because the VeeFam is full of amazing people! Check out her site here for so much incredible information!
The fun, the chaos, the grails… here’s what you need to know before you fire up your first stream.
Breaking isn’t just ripping packs on camera — it’s building a show, creating a community, and bringing the excitement of the hobby to life. It’s part sports commentary, part TV host, part customer service… and a little bit of juggling flaming swords while someone yells “CHECK THE CHAT!” from the back row.
Whether you’re here because you love cards, love people, or just want to see if you can pull a 1/1 live, this guide will walk you through the essentials to get started without pulling your hair out.
The Gear You’ll Need
Camera: You really only need one and your phone will work great! But if you want to kick it up a notch, two will look even better — one overhead for the cards, one front-facing for you.
Lighting: Soft, even lighting so cards look crisp (no shadows or glare).
Microphone: Clear audio is non-negotiable.
Internet: Stable, high-speed connection — wired if possible.
Pro Tip: You don’t need to spend thousands. Start with what you have, upgrade as you go.
Setting the Stage
Breaking is a show. Your table is your stage. Keep it clean, organized, and branded if possible.
Background: Keep it tidy or themed — no laundry piles in frame.
Break Mat: Protects your cards and gives a professional look.
Organizing Hits: Use stands or labeled piles so your audience can see the fire you’re pulling.
Knowing the Flow
Every breaker develops their own rhythm, but a smooth stream usually has:
Hype & Welcome – Say hi to everyone joining.
Explain the Break – What’s in the product, how the break works, how they can join.
The Rip – Open packs, show hits clearly, keep it moving but not rushed.
Recap – Show all the hits at the end before signing off.
Note: The best thing you can do is watch multiple streams and figure out what you like and what you don’t like. Take lots of notes, and then try it out for yourself.
Engaging Your Audience
A good breaker doesn’t just open cards — they connect with people.
Read usernames out loud. Yep, even the ones that are user462367.
Celebrate their hits like they’re your own. Even the hits that might not be grails.
Keep the chat moving with questions, polls, and reactions.
Be transparent — if there’s a stream issue or delay, say it. People just want to know what’s going on
Note: Practice, practice, practice. The first few (or 20) streams will feel rough. Just keep pushing through and making small improvements each stream.
The Breaker’s Mindset
Breaking is fun, but it’s also work. Be prepared for:
Technical hiccups (your mic will die mid-grail pull at least once).
Trolls in chat — don’t feed them, just block. It doesn’t happen often in this community but every now and then a negative Ned will find your stream.
Long nights — big streams can run for hours. Figure out what works with your schedule to maximize your time and energy.
The business side — tracking sales, shipping, inventory. This is just as important as your customer service and entertainer skills!
A WhatNot Crash Course
Your quick guide to how live streams work (and how to make the most of them).
If you’ve ever jumped into a WhatNot stream and thought, “Wait… what’s even happening right now?” — you’re not alone. It moves fast, there’s a lot of inside lingo, and before you know it, someone’s yelling about a 1/1 like it’s the Super Bowl.
We’ve put together this quick crash course to help you understand the basics so you can bid, buy, and hang out with confidence.

What Is WhatNot?
WhatNot is a live selling platform where people auction products in real time. Think eBay meets Twitch — but faster, more interactive, and way more fun.
It’s not just VeeFriends. It’s also sports cards, clothing, shoes, makeup and more!
Every community is different. Some have chill vibes, others are more serious.
Be careful getting caught up in the hype and FOMO. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or lose track of swipes.
Here’s the typical flow of a live WhatNot stream:
Say hi when you join — it’s a community, not just a store.
If you have a question, ask! Most sellers love explaining how things work.
Don’t bid unless you’re ready to buy — bids are final.
Follow sellers you like so you know when they go live.

Why We Love It
For us, WhatNot is more than a marketplace. It’s a place where collectors connect, grails are pulled live, and kids learn about entrepreneurship and character through the hobby.
